Chapter 15

Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Charlie

“Have you ever seen anything like that?” she said, a quiet awe in her voice.

He shook his head, momentarily at a loss for words.

They sat on a blanket spread out on red limestone, the sun here warming them rather than baking them as it would have done back home. Between them sat a half-eaten burger (hers), a couple of empty beer bottles (his), and the other wrappings and boxes of a fast food picnic.

Below them a small valley spread out, green with fir and pine. The spicy odor of sage was strong. Across the valley, spires and boulders of limestone jutted like teeth out of the ground. In places, boulders were stacked one on top of others to create towers that looked as if they must have been engineered, but were in fact the motionless remains left behind by hundreds of thousands of years of erosion.

The sun was setting on all of it, setting the mountains on fire and casting long, deep shadows across the valley.

“No wonder they call it the Garden of the Gods,” Charlie said, lying back on his elbows. He waved his hand unnecessarily. “All that couldn’t get done with just one god.”

He watched her as she ran back to the car, tan thighs flashing in her white sun dress. Goddamn she was fine.

Whatever you’re doing, Charlie Bishop, just keep doing it.

There was enough sun to make out the round shape of her butt as she leaned into the car to rummage through her luggage, and then she was slamming the door and running back, something long and dark in her hand. He could tell from her shining eyes that she was excited, and she practically skidded to a stop and then dropped back onto the blanket, her hand behind her back.

“You’re killing me,” he grinned.

Purity grinned, too, her teeth even and white in the dying light. She whipped the hand from behind her back and held it out to him. “Ta-da.”

He eyed it skeptically for a moment. “It’s a sock. Looks like one of mine.”

She pushed it toward him, making a face. “I didn’t have any wrapping paper.” When he didn’t grab it, she said, “It’s clean!”

Laughing, he took the sock-wrapped gift from her. It was solid and surprisingly heavy. Unrolling it to prevent snags, Charlie gradually saw thick, carved deer antler, a polished bronze cross-piece. Then he pulled the leather scabbard free and revealed a
